The Timmins Police Service is proud to announce the installation of Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology in our patrol vehicles. This advanced technology is now fully operational and will play a vital role in enhancing public safety across the Timmins community.
ALPR systems are designed to automatically detect and capture license plate information from passing vehicles, helping officers identify vehicles linked to criminal activity, traffic violations, or other investigations. This includes stolen vehicles, drivers operating with suspended or revoked licenses, and vehicles associated with wanted persons. The technology assists officers by alerting them in real time, allowing them to take swift and appropriate enforcement actions.
Chief of Timmins Police Service, Sydney Lecky expressed his enthusiasm for the implementation of this technology: “The addition of ALPR technology is a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of our community. It allows our officers to quickly and efficiently identify vehicles that may pose a risk, helping us take appropriate action while continuing to uphold the highest standards of service and transparency.”
Deputy Chief of Timmins Police Service, Darren Dinel emphasized the value this technology brings to police operations: “ALPR technology enhances both public and officer safety. It enables our officers to be more effective in their day-to-day duties, allowing them to focus their efforts on the issues that matter most to our community. We are committed to using this tool responsibly and in full compliance with privacy laws.”
The Timmins Police Service would like to remind the public to fulfill their legal obligations regarding vehicle registration. To avoid being recognized by the ALPR, please ensure that your vehicle’s license and plates are renewed and validated in a timely manner. Taking this simple step will help you stay compliant with traffic laws, allowing our officers to concentrate on identifying suspicious vehicles and enhancing public safety on our roads.
The TPS is committed to protecting the privacy and rights of all citizens. The use of ALPR technology adheres strictly to the guidelines set forth by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) and complies fully with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). The data collected is only used for law enforcement purposes and will be managed in accordance with applicable privacy regulations.
This investment in technology is part of Timmins Police Service’s ongoing commitment to enhancing community safety, increasing transparency, and improving the efficiency of police services in Timmins.
