The Timmins Police Service is pleased to share progress on additional enforcement activities aimed at addressing public drug use, property crime, and disorderly conduct in identified areas of concern across the city. This proactive approach has already shown positive results in enhancing community safety and fostering stronger connections with local residents and businesses.
On October 16, 2024, additional officers were deployed to support front-line policing duties. The additional officers focused on areas of chronic complaints across the City of Timmins, engaging directly with individuals, encouraging access to social services, and addressing chronic criminal behaviors through targeted enforcement.
The most notable activities included a general police presence, arresting people wanted on arrest warrants, and intervening during the commission of criminal offences. This resulted in the seizure of stolen property and minor amounts of illicit drugs. One success was the recovery of several pairs of hockey skates valued at $7000 that were stolen from a local hockey team.
Officers were focused on areas where police receive chronic complaints of theft, open drug use, and other disorderly behavior. These areas included our downtown area as well as locations were retail stores are located throughout the City. Officers routinely conducted regular foot patrols and the use of Timmins Transit for broader area coverage, extending efforts to South Porcupine and the Timmins Square.
Officers utilized the expertise of community partners and promoted access to resources available through local service providers to connect individuals in need with supports such as addiction services, mental health care, and social assistance. Collaborating organizations include Timmins and Area District Hospital, (AMCT), Canadian Mental Health Association, Cochrane District Services Board, Mushkegowuk Fire Keepers, Living Space, and Victim Services.
This effort underscores the value of strong partnerships and the importance of maintaining a visible presence in the community. The additional presence was met with positive feedback from community residents and business owners who acknowledged the efforts to improve public safety. The Timmins Police Service remains committed to continuing efforts to provide proactive policing activities to meet community needs, particularly efforts to address public safety concerns.
Chief Syd Lecky stated: “The Timmins Police Service is committed to addressing community concerns. This initiative is contributing to community safety by balancing the needs of all of the clients we serve. The delivery of a measured response that is inclusive of enforcement, support and collaboration provides an opportunity to build a safer and stronger community together.”
