The Timmins Police Service is pleased to announce a new initiative designed to streamline the collision reporting process for drivers. Effective February 1st, 2025, motorists involved in a collision can begin their collision report from their own device before completing the process at the Collision Reporting Centre. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and convenience while ensuring compliance with Ontario’s collision reporting laws.
A Collision Reporting Centre is a facility where members of the public can report traffic collisions to meet provincial legal requirements and insurance needs. Ontario law mandates that all motor vehicle collisions involving injury or property damage exceeding $5,000 be reported to the police.
How It Works:
- Start Your Report Online – Drivers can begin their accident report using a secure online platform, allowing them to enter essential details before visiting the Collision Reporting Centre.
- Gather Required Information – Before attending the centre, drivers should:
- Check the Exceptions List (see below) to determine if a police presence is required at the scene.
- If safe, move their vehicle off the roadway to prevent further incidents.
- Exchange information with other involved drivers and witnesses, including names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance details, and vehicle registration.
- Ensure they have their driver’s licence, vehicle registration, and insurance documents ready.
- Complete the Process In Person – Once the online portion is completed, drivers must attend the Collision Reporting Centre in the jurisdiction where the collision occurred. If the vehicle is driveable, it should be taken to the centre as soon as possible. If the vehicle requires towing, the tow company will transport the vehicle and driver directly to the centre from the scene.
Exceptions Requiring Police Presence at the Scene:
- Injury or death
- Criminal activity (e.g., impaired driving, stolen vehicle, assault)
- Federal, provincial, or municipal vehicles involved
- Vehicles transporting dangerous goods
- Damage to private, municipal, or highway property
- Towed vehicles must go directly to the police reporting centre from the scene during business hours.
Important Reminder: Drivers must report their collision to the Collision Reporting Centre in the jurisdiction where the collision occurred, not the one closest to their home address.
By offering the option to pre-report collisions online, the Timmins Police Service aims to enhance efficiency, reduce wait times, and improve overall public safety. This initiative aligns with our commitment to modernizing services and ensuring a seamless experience for those involved in motor vehicle collisions.
