
(TIMMINS, ON) On August 16, 2025, the Timmins Police Service responded to a report of a gunshot-related injury. An investigation was initiated, during which officers identified a suspicious vehicle believed to be connected to the occurrence.
On August 17, 2025, officers attempted to stop the vehicle in order to identify the driver. The vehicle failed to stop and fled from police. For public safety reasons, no pursuit was initiated.
A short time later, the vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle collision when it struck a tree at the corner of Vimy Avenue and Waterloo Road. Despite the collision, the vehicle continued on before coming to a stop on Borden Avenue.
Police attended the scene shortly thereafter and observed the driver walking away from the vehicle. Following a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody. Incident to arrest, officers seized a quantity of drugs as well as a handgun.
As a result of the investigation, Derrick WRIGHTMAN, 30, of Timmins, has been charged with the following offences:
- Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Carry Concealed Weapon
- Dangerous Operation
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
- Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing there was Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin)
- Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
WRIGHTMAN remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today, August 18, 2025, for a bail hearing.
At this time, investigators are still working to determine the identity of the shooter involved in the original incident. The investigation remains ongoing. The Timmins Police Service believes this was a targeted incident.
Investigators are asking residents and businesses to review any surveillance footage or dashcam footage they may have from the following locations and times:
- Vimy Avenue and Waterloo Road area (scene of the collision at approximately 9:45 AM on August 17, 2025)
- Algonquin Boulevard and Fifth Avenue between Elm Street North and Cedar Street (between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on August 16, 2025)
