The Timmins Police Service responded to a call at approximately 4:08 a.m. this morning in relation to a bear attack in the area of Lozanne Crescent.
A resident had let their dog outside when they noticed a bear cub in a nearby tree. As efforts were made to retrieve the dog, the resident was attacked by the mother bear. A family member who attempted to assist was also injured. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The dog was unharmed.
Given the urgency of the situation police were called to assist. The bears were not located despite a search and patrols in the area. This incident has been forwarded to the Ministry of Natural Resources for further investigation and response.
Bear Safety Reminders:
- Never approach bear cubs – the mother is likely close by and may respond defensively.
- Avoid intervening in bear encounters – your safety should be the top priority.
- Secure garbage and outdoor food sources – never leave pet food, birdseed, or waste accessible to wildlife.
When to Call Police or 911 (Emergency Situations):
Call 911 or the Timmins Police Service if a bear:
- Enters or tries to enter a residence or school yard while school is in session
- Stalks or lingers near people in a threatening manner
- Wanders into a public gathering
- Kills a pet or livestock and remains in the area
- Exhibits aggressive or threatening behaviour
In these situations, police will respond and may contact the Ministry for support.
Who to Call for Non-Emergency Bear Sightings:
Please do not contact police for general bear sightings. Call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY: 705-945-7641) if a bear:
- Is seen roaming without lingering
- Checks garbage cans or knocks over a bird feeder
- Climbs or rests in a tree
- Enters sheds where food or garbage is stored
- Moves through open spaces or yards without posing a threat
