The Timmins Police Service is launching the CAMSafe program to complement existing crime prevention programs focusing on a safer Timmins.
CAMSafe is a volunteer-based registry of closed circuit, security video and doorbell cameras, which allows for the Timmins Police Service to be more efficient with its investigations. The outdated practice of canvassing for CCTV footage will be retired and replaced by a modern advancement in information sharing.
Investigators will now be able to verify CCTV availability at their work station, and geo-fence the vicinity of any given crime, view a map of the area and determine who is registered and able to assist the police. From there, the officer will use the contact information provided to request the footage from the owner, which in turn, leads to a faster and more effective response.
Constable David Wilkie, who recognized the investigative advantages created by the implementation of this program, completed significant research and approached the Timmins Police Service administration to consider launching the program locally.
He is quoted as saying “This program is very much akin to Neighborhood Watch 2.0, in terms of acting as an effective crime deterrent and a vital investigative tool for front line officers. In certain circumstances, a review of CAMSafe availability will be the starting point for officers to quickly find video footage from community members who opt to register for the program to assist with investigations.”
The investigative value for both the police service and our citizens is obvious, as evidenced by the success experienced by other police services who have this in their tool kit.
Program participation is completely voluntary, and there is no cost to sign up. Equally important to note is that there is no onus on persons to provide anything to the police. CAMSafe is simply a meaningful first step in any investigation, putting police in touch with concerned citizens who can help.
Any local citizen or business owner with questions regarding the program or who wishes to register can do so at https://camsafe.ca/ or via the Timmins Police Service Website at www.timminspolice.ca under Online Services, CAMSafe.
The Timmins Police Services Board chair, Kraymr Grenke, adds, “The implementation of this system is a genuine partnership between the police and concerned citizens willing to take the simple steps necessary to enhance public safety and reduce crime in our community. The CAMSafe program is built on the premise of participation of residents and businesses. I actively encourage all citizens who have such systems or devices at their homes or businesses to register their basic contact information and camera locations. Crime prevention is a partnership, and this program stands to benefit individuals and the community at large.”
