(TIMMINS) The Timmins Police Service is not a participant in the federal government’s Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program.
The program, administered by Public Safety Canada, allows eligible businesses and individuals to surrender prohibited assault-style firearms in exchange for compensation. Participation by municipal police services is voluntary.
After reviewing the available program information, the Timmins Police Service has determined that participation is not feasible at this time due to resource limitations, competing operational priorities, and the absence of a clearly defined and fully communicated operational framework outlining municipal police roles and responsibilities.
“Our focus remains on frontline response, crime prevention, holding offenders accountable, and supporting victims,” he said. “These priorities are critical to maintaining community safety and ensuring our limited resources are directed where they have the greatest impact.” said Chief of Police Syd Lecky.
While Timmins Police Service will not participate in the compensation program, the Service will continue to accept the voluntary surrender of firearms from members of the public for safe disposal, in accordance with existing procedures which does not involve compensation. Individuals wishing to surrender a firearm are asked to contact the Timmins Police Service directly for further guidance.
Questions regarding the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program, including eligibility and compensation, should be directed to Public Safety Canada. Additional information is available on the Government of Canada website.
The Timmins Police Service will continue to work collaboratively with policing and government partners to support public safety initiatives while ensuring responsible and effective use of local policing resources.
