The Timmins Police Service has concluded its Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program for December 2024, aimed at promoting safe driving practices during the holiday season. This year’s initiative saw a significant effort to deter impaired driving and ensure the safety of our roadways.
Key Statistics from the December 2024 Festive RIDE Program:
- 670 vehicles checked
- 181 Approved Screening Device demands were made.
- 5 three-day suspensions issued for Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) exceeding 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood
- 2 charges under the Highway Traffic Act
- 2 charges under the Cannabis Control Act, with cannabis seized
- 1 charge for operation while impaired by drugs
“Although it’s unfortunate that impaired driving still occurs, we are encouraged to see relatively low numbers compared to past years,” said Constable Watson. “In no case should anyone be driving impaired—whether under the influence of alcohol, or drugs. It is a preventable choice that endangers lives. These results show that while many motorists are making responsible decisions, there is still work to be done.”
The Timmins Police Service reminds all residents that impaired driving is entirely avoidable. Here are some tips to help you make safe choices:
- Plan ahead: Arrange for a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare if you plan to consume alcohol or cannabis.
- Use public transportation: Many cities offer extended transit hours during the holiday season.
- Stay over: If you’re celebrating at a friend’s or family member’s house, consider staying the night.
- Host responsibly: If you’re hosting a gathering, ensure your guests have safe ways to get home and limit the availability of alcohol.
Driving under the influence is not only dangerous but carries severe legal consequences. The Timmins Police Service will continue its efforts to enforce impaired driving laws and protect all road users.
We thank the community for their cooperation and commitment to safety throughout the Festive RIDE program. Let’s work together to make 2025 an even safer year on our roads.
